Base Layers Explained: Comfort Starts at Skin Level

If your clothing touching the skin doesn’t work properly, nothing else can. Base layers decide how warm, dry and comfortable you stay on the bank. Get this layer right and the rest of your system becomes easy.

Why moisture management matters most

Sweat is heat leaving your body. If moisture sits against your skin, it cools rapidly. A good base layer moves sweat away fast so your core temperature stays steady.

Keep cotton out of your system

Cotton absorbs and holds moisture. Once wet, it becomes heavy and cold. On the bank, that means shivering as soon as you slow down.

Synthetics that support heat retention

Lightweight synthetic fabrics wick moisture and dry quickly. They help your body regulate temperature effortlessly, especially during bursts of activity.

A base layer should feel like you’re wearing less

You should barely notice it working. No bulk, no clingy discomfort. Just comfort that lets you focus on the rods. How to test a base layer

If water beads or rolls off when lightly splashed, that’s a sign of good wicking. If it soaks in and darkens instantly, it will likely trap moisture while you fish.

Build your system from the skin out

  • Base: moisture management
  • Mid: insulation and heat control
  • Outer: breathable waterproof protection

Movement = warmth

Mobility helps your body generate heat. A flexible base layer supports natural movement, keeping your temperature steady all session.

Fortis layering picks

  • Tundra Fleece – key mid layer to lock in heat.
  • Trail Hoodie – light insulation over the top.
  • Marine Jacket – breathable barrier to seal your system.

Comfort starts where your clothing touches skin. Build from the base and every layer works better.
