Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Fishing Jackets: What Actually Keeps You Dry

There’s rain you can shrug off and rain that soaks through everything. Knowing the difference between waterproof and water-resistant gear helps you stay comfortable, focused and ready when the weather turns.

Water-resistant: showers and short bursts

Water-resistant fabrics shed light rain for a while, then eventually wet out. They’re great for quick moves, summer squalls and mobile sessions where weight matters most.

Waterproof: protection for sustained weather

Waterproof jackets are engineered to keep out prolonged rain and wind. With proper seams and a reliable membrane, they protect your inner layers so your body heat stays where it belongs.

Breathability matters as much as rating

Stay dry inside as well as outside. A breathable shell lets moisture escape from your mid layers so you don’t end up clammy. That balance is what keeps you fishing well deep into a session. Understand ratings in plain English

Hydrostatic head (mm) indicates water pressure a fabric can resist. Higher is tougher in sustained rain. Breathability ratings tell you how fast sweat vapour can pass out. Look for a sensible balance rather than chasing the highest single number.

Fit and movement on the bank

You need coverage without feeling boxed in. Check hood shape, cuff seals and hem length when you’re crouching, netting or casting. Freedom to move keeps your head in the game.

Build a simple system

  • Base: moves sweat off your skin
  • Mid: adds warmth without bulk
  • Outer: blocks wind and rain

Recommended Fortis choices

  • Marine Jacket – dependable waterproof protection for long, wet sessions.
  • Trail Insulated Jacket – warmth that layers cleanly under a shell.
  • Tundra Fleece – breathable mid layer to keep heat steady.

Pick your protection, then layer smart. Stay dry, stay warm and keep fishing when others pack up.
